In this training module we demonstrated how to use R to conduct analysis of various aspects of international trade and trade policy, as well as how to evaluate intensity of NTM use by countries. NTMs, as policy instruments, can directly contribute to sustainable development. The analysis presented in this recent ESCAP report shows that almost half of NTMs in Asia and the Pacific directly address SDGs.

R can be used to identify those NTMs that directly address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To learn more about the methodology of linking NTMs to SDGs and about the R code that can be used to identify NTMs that directly address SDGs, please refer to the ESCAP’s training module titled R for linking non-tariff measures to the Sustainable Development Goals. After you go through it, you may try to utilize knowledge acquired in the present training module to calculate NTM intensity indicators (coverage ratio, frequency index and prevalence score), as well as regulatory distance index only for those NTMs that directly address SDGs.
